Who should participate in this course?

This course is specifically designed for tutors who wish to enhance their skills in the delivery of adult education and achieve an internationally recognised qualification on the National Framework of Qualifications and to be eligible to apply for the FAS National Register of Trainers (NRT).

Learners should be actively involved in the delivery of an Adult Education Programme and be in a position to practice in the classroom the skills and techniques, covered in this programme.

General Aims

This programme is designed to provide learners with the knowledge, skills and attitude to facilitate adult learners.


Entry Requirements

All learners must be fluent English speakers.

Learners should capable of undertaking self directed learning.

Learners must have the subject matter expertise for the adult education programme they propose to teach.


Course Syllabus

This programme covers the following topics in depth and learners are expected to complete additional self directed learning and research:

Unit 1: Theory of training and adult learning

  • Concepts of training and education
  • Coherent framework for training practice
  • Effective communication in groups
  • Understanding group dynamics
  • Key principles and methodologies which underpin adult learning
  • Approaches of different adult learning theorists
  • Contribution of theorists

Unit 2: The role of the trainer

  • Values which inform practice in training
  • Good training practice
  • Different preferred learning styles, training styles and conflict resolution techniques
  • Discriminatory attitudes and behaviours
  • Appropriate work boundaries
  • Personal training and development needs

Unit 3: Training needs analysis and programme design

  • Job roles and the behaviours within those jobs
  • Identifying training needs
  • Analyse training needs
  • Learning and performance objectives
  • How learning objectives can be used to evaluate learning effectiveness
  • Design learning programmes relevant to the identified needs of learners 
  • Ensuring the programme conforms to the requirements of certification bodies

Unit 4: Preparing for training delivery

  • Plan the delivery of a training session
  • Preparation of appropriate training methods for each element of the training session
  • Production of exercises for use within a training session
  • Preparation of tools or visual aids for the training session

Unit 5: Delivery and assessment

  • Establishing, promoting and maintaining a positive learning culture
  • Use of relevant training strategies
  • Effective listening and feedback skills
  • Evaluating progress on an on-going basis
  • Providing informative feedback to learners throughout the programme 
  • Assessing learners achievement of the training objectives 
  • Evaluate a range of assessment techniques

Unit 6: Evaluation of training

  • Evaluating a training programme
  • Evaluate learner progress against learning objectives 
  • Gathering information from learners on programme effectiveness
  • Identify opportunities for improvement of delivery
  • Preparing a programme improvement plan

Work Experience

The College recommends learners carry out at least 25 hours work experience.

In addition as part of the programme learners will be expected to observe a trainer in the classroom for a minimum of 25 hours or be actively involved in the delivery of a training programmme.

Work experience may be undertaken in a paid or voluntary capacity.
