Learners requiring a certificate in Occupational first aid for their employment.

General Aims

To give learners the practical first aid skills required to operate to the highest standard of care.

Entry Requirements

Learners must be proficient in the English language

There are no other specific entry requirements

Unit 1: First Aid in context
- Terms relating to First Aid
- Responsibilities of first-aider
- Life threating conditions
- Airway, breathing, circulation (ABC)
- Dealing with emergencies
- Content of First-Aid kit
Unit 2: Understanding First Aid
- Concussion
- Fractures
- Burns
- Poison
- Dangerous substances
- Spina injury
Unit 3: Initial diagnosis and general treatment
- Assessing a casualty
- Signs and symptoms
- Treatment of a trauma victim
- Treatment of a casualty
- Control of bleeding
- Bandaging
Unit 4: First Aid skills
- Demonstrations using mannequin
- Simulated casualty
- Chocking Casualty
- Wound Treatments
- Use of items from the First-Aid kit
- Immobilising a child with a suspect spinal injury
Unit 5: Health and Safety legislation
- Duties of employers under current legislation
- Guidelines provided by the Health and Safety Authority
- System of training, assessment and certification for occupational first-aiders
- Record keeping
- Steps in reporting an accident
