Introduction to Childcare

The College of Progressive Education, childcare school has grown in size since it was founded as the School of Practical Child Care in 1986. It is now the largest private childcare college in Ireland and, more importantly, within the profession it is undoubtedly the most highly regarded.

Our reputation is based on our belief that the welfare of the child is paramount, and that the best way to provide for this is to ensure that carers receive quality training and support.

We offer a variety of courses, ranging from introduction to advanced level.

Our courses include:
  • One-year full-time FETAC Level 5 course in Dublin
  • Part-time courses in Dublin and at regional centers throughout Ireland
  • On-site training for businesses, organizations and groups
  • Outreach training in educational institutions (second-level, VEC colleges, adult education, etc.)
  • Distance Learning and online training courses, for those who prefer to study from home, or for overseas learners.

Driven by the changing lifestyles of the modern world, the demand for childcare workers continues to grow. The profession now offers a range of exciting career opportunities to those who have received the appropriate training. For example, graduates will find work in a crèche, pre-school or playgroup, or in a variety of other childcare related areas.

The College welcomes adult learners of all nationalities and we take pleasure in helping our learners to take the right steps towards a rewarding career in their chosen field. Welcoming International Learners

European Union applicants fill the majority of places on the College of Progressive Education full-time, part time and distance learning courses. However, the School is pleased to consider applications from non-EU residents who meet our entry requirements. Such applicants will be required to provide suitable evidence of proficiency in English. Please contact the School for start dates and application forms.

In the past learners have come from Hong Kong, Japan, USA, UK, Malaysia, Switzerland, Spain, France, Netherlands, Russia, Slovakia, Mexico, Finland and Canada. They have followed various courses in Childcare and Early Education, Crèche Management, Special Needs and Child Psychology.

The College of Progressive Education encourages international learners to come and study with us in the classroom, via correspondence or through the Internet. The College has also been involved in a number of schemes designed to bring education to those who could not readily access it in their own countries, or due to any impairment that makes conventional study difficult. These include our internet courses, which integrate accessibility for individuals with additional needs.
