Who should participate in this course?

This course is designed for those working or planning to work with children with Special Needs.


General Aims

Entry Requirements

Please note that the Dept. of Education and Science has minimum education requirements for permanent positions.

Applicants are asked to submit, with their application form, a short account of their previous experience in the area of special needs, if any.  Applicants should also indicate how they plan to obtain their work experience during the course, if they are not already working in the area.

Minimum age is 17 yers.
Learners must be capable of undertaking assessment work to Ordinary Level Leaving Certificate standard.
International learners undertaking this course should have confidence in their English language, reading, writing and comprehension skills and have at least a 5 IELTS  score or equivalent.


Career Options
Special Needs Assistant in primary, secondary or special needs school. Staff member in crèche, pre-school or day care centre for children and adults with special needs.

Work Experience

Minimum of 80 hours:

To meet Froebel requirements a minimum of 50 hours must be completed in an education setting/school where the learner is working with children with special needs and where the teacher/ supervisor’s qualification is recognized by the Dept of Education and Science.
Work experience in a primary school is recommended.

To meet FETAC requirements, a minimum of 30 hours must be working in a special needs setting with children under the age of 18.  These hours may, but do not have to be, in a school setting.  Work experience may be undertaken in a paid or voluntary capacity.

Learners who choose to do 50 hours or more work experience, can apply  to do our Work Experience FETAC Level 5 bridging course at the same time (for a small extra fee). This allows learners to simultaneously obtain their Component Certificate  in Work Experience FETAC Level 5.


Assessment Method

Continuous assessment based on project, assignments, diary of work experience and portfolio.

Duration

Thirteen months, (approx) with four compulsory one-day workshops, held in Dublin City Centre.
